Earth Hour???!!How ’bout Earth Hours???

Earth Hour ended just a few moments ago. Everyone was invited to turn off their lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, as a way of voting for Earth against global warming. To increase awareness about the damages global warming has done to our planet. Thank you to all those who turned off their lights, who supported this little way of showing that the Earth is worth saving. To those who didn’t, and sadly, there are those who didn’t, well, i feel really sorry for you guys. You were given an opportunity to show how much living on our planet meant to you, it was just one hour and you couldn’t spare it. Oh, well, there are just some people who don’t care. The Earth is already dying, already loosing the luster it once had, everything changed because of us. Some of us could say that it wasn’t our fault, but every single one of us contributes to it, whether we are aware of that or not. That’s why, we, the people of this planet, are asked to try to do, even little things to help Earth. Like the simple turning off of our lights. Wasn’t it just a simple task? But other people just couldn’t risk not being able to see light, even just for an hour. But, I have a problem with that. Why is it only one hour? I mean, it’s good that we support Earth Hour, but why only one? Why is it that people only do something to help our planet when everybody else does it? Why can’t we have Earth Hours instead of just one Earth Hour? Why can’t we grab every single opportunity we can to help our planet. You might say it’s hard. You might say “hey, i can’t stop CO2 from building up in the atmosphere”. Well, you can, if we try to lessen the use of things that have CO2 or ways that populate CO2, that alone already, in it’s little way, helps. Why don’t we use paper or reusable bags instead of plastic? Why do we have to use disposable items when we can use biodegradable and reusable ones? Some of these things are really simple but we can’t seem to be able to do it and I don’t understand why that is? Oh, well, I just hope that today’s Earth Hour was able to raise awareness to people about how serious the situation happening to our planet is. Try to think of the Earth as a big shopping mall or supermarket, if it runs out of clothes or products, well, can you shop anywhere else? Our Earth is the only living planet, the only planet that is suitable for us to live in. Help it. Save it.

Watch out for the 11th Hour on HBO this coming April 22, Wed, 9 pm or try to watch other documentaries to be able to learn more about global warming, its effects and why the Earth is worth saving.

how long…

how long has it been since my last post????i can’t even remember the last time i updated my blog…oh, well, i’ve just been too busy with school and i had a lot of things to do during my vacation…haha..

anyways, well, i would love to write about all of those things but i just don’t have the time right now….school has started again and that just means more projects and homeworks..i mean it’s just the third day back and we’ve already got loads..can u believe that????haha…

anyways, i’ll try to write more if i have time..mybe, because this is my passion..haha…got to go, homework calls, until my next post….

HARRY POTTER VS TWILIGHT

Written by Mike and Lina J

This year see’s the release of two major Books to Film franchises. The first being the 6th instalment of JK Rowling’s established Harry Potter series:  Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. The second is Twilight from Stephanie Myers Twilight book series , which recently concluded with her fourth instalment: Breaking Dawn.

The Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince film will be released on the 21st November and Twilight will be released a mere three weeks later on the 12th December – almost placing them head to head.

So is competition in the air? Which movie will win out?  JK Rowling, and her established fan base?  Or perhaps, Stephanie Meyer’s loyal, almost fanatical fans?

Fi-Sci looks in detail at each franchise and tries to find out who has the lead.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE

JK Rowling is the biggest phenomenon to hit book shelves in recent memory. She has rekindled interest in the written word, especially amongst the younger readers.

Released in 1997 – Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (Sorcerer’s Stone in America) went on to win many awards and sell a huge amount of books. A further 6 Books eventually finished the saga, with the Final book; Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows arriving in 2007.

In 2001 a film adaption was made,  directed by Christopher Columbus (Home Alone) and released through Warner Bros Studio, the film went on to gross over 900 million worldwide, so far 5 films have released.  Each one amassing over 750 million worldwide, the last movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is currently the second highest grossing Potter film behind Philosophers Stone, not bad for the 5th Film in the franchise, where normally Film’s tend get much lower attendances after the 3rd Movie and onwards (Superman & Batman being notable examples).

So, with such a success story, should Harry Potter be worried about this pretender to the throne that is the Twilight Series?

Summary:

1. An established Franchise that has already proved it has a wider audience than just the loyal readers.

2. Each film has a very large disposable Budget, much larger than Twilights comparatively miniscule one.

3. The three main stars Daniel Radcliffe(Harry), Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron) have all gone on to become established stars of the series.

4. The series continues to get Darker as it goes on, growing from its original audience of young teens to readers who are now into their twenties.

5. Unlike Twilight, the characters are not broadly drawn and we are not sure what to expect, who will die and character development is more evident here. Indeed in this instalment, a major character dies and even more shocking is who kills him.

6. JK Rowling’s plot contains Seven years of tightly developed story and clever twists and turns.

7. The Twilight series has only a large mainstream audience in America, whereas Europe is the main source of the Potter films’ overall gross.

TWILIGHT

2005 saw Stephanie Meyer plant the seeds to a literal overnight success. With Twilight the first of a four book collection which kept a fast growing fan base happily entertained with a new book each consecutive year until the last hit shelves just a few weeks ago. Her books have even given J K Rowling a run for her money.

It didn’t take movie makers long to realise that Twilight was a potential cash cow. Summit Entertainment quickly stepped in and acquired the rights to produce the first book in to a film. For summit this could really be their making, as they have spent an unusually low amount on the production which has been said to be as little as 30 million.

It would seem that this film really can’t fail with its reduced budget costs and huge loyal fan base. There are already talks underway  discussing the second books’ film making potential.

Summary:

1. An already massive fan base that is steadily rising.

2. Resent San Diego Comic Con hysteria for Twilight can still be heard half way around the globe.

3. Leading man Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen) is fast becoming a well known actor and male icon you only have to look on YouTube to see what a stir he’s coursing.  Aside from the fact that he too has also starred in the Harry Potter movies as Cedric Diggory. Leading lady Kristen Stuart (Bella Swan) has her own list of films behind her staring with such people as Jodie Foster and Meg Ryan.

4. This film alone has a huge amount of appeal without considering the continuation of the action packed adventures that are sure to follow. With its real life difficulties of starting a new life away from what you’ve always known to romance, throat grabbing action and plenty of fast cars.

5. Talks and scripts are already in place for future filming.

6. Merchandise alone is already bringing in the big money.

7. Unfortunately for Harry Potter he’s been around now for quite some time and it seems that even though he has his loyal followers the hype behind the adventure series is slowly dying down where as the Twilight saga is still young and fresh bring a new taste to the table with new characters and adventure with a more realistic twist of being in the real world.

8. This film will be given the chance to thrive with its love interests attracting viewer to re-watch the film again to revisit their favourite scenes. After all the sex appeal in this film isn’t hard to miss and everyone wants the perfect partner and that is exactly what you’re going to get with this film. You only have to look at Titanic’s repeated audiences to see this films potential.

9.  Stepenie Meyer has given J K Rowling a run for her money by knocking Rowling’s books off the best sellers lists more than once.

10. Harry Potter is essentially a children’s story and all those children seem to have grown up now, whereas Twilight is written for an older audience, essentially attracting a wider array of readers.

11. Come rain, shine, hail, snow and gale force winds fans were camped out watching filming of this movie to see its potential and show their unwavering support for Twilight as it was brought to life.

HALF BLOOD PRINCE DELAYED UNTIL 2009

Written by Mike

Source: Warner Bros

Warner Bros have released a press release, advising that Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince until July 2009!! This may explain the lack of Teasers/Trailer for the film, which was due for release 21st November this year!

This will not delay the release of the further sequels apparently, but what a blow to now have to wait a further 8 months for the release !

Press Release:

BURBANK, CA, August 14, 2008 – Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that it has moved back the release date of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. The sixth installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise will now open day-and-date domestically and in the major international markets on July 17, 2009. The announcement was made by Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros.

In making the announcement, Mr. Horn stated, “Our reasons for shifting ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers’ strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films—changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move ‘Half-Blood Prince’ to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.”

Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, confirmed, “The release date change does not alter the production schedule for this or future Harry Potter films. Post-production on ‘Half-Blood Prince’ was completed on time, and the studio’s release plans for the two-part ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ will not be affected by this change. We know Harry Potter fans are eagerly anticipating seeing the final chapters unfold onscreen. In fact, the good news for them is that the gap will now be shortened between ‘Half-Blood Prince’ and the first part of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’”

Commenting on the release date change for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” David Heyman, the producer of all the Harry Potter films, offered, “When Jeff Robinov explained the rationale behind moving the release date of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ to July 2009, it was immediately apparent that this offered us the potential to reach the widest possible audience. I am extremely proud of this latest film and of the work of David Yates and our incomparable cast; I believe we have developed and pushed the series further still. We are all looking forward to sharing it with Harry Potter fans around the world, even if we have to wait just a bit longer.”

David Yates, the director of both “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and who will also helm “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” added, “It has been a joy to work on ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.’ Dan, Rupert and Emma and all our returning young cast continue to blossom, and our new cast members bring fresh color and life to Hogwarts. Even as we put the finishing touches on this latest film, we are already beginning preparations on the final two films—we start filming in February—and I am excited to bring this remarkable series to the exciting and moving conclusion its loyal fans deserve.”

In “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Heyday Films production, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Yates, who directed last year’s summer blockbuster “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” returns to direct “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” David Heyman and David Barron are the producers, with Lionel Wigram serving as executive producer. Steve Kloves wrote the screenplay, based on the book by J.K. Rowling.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are reprising their roles as young wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The film also stars Jim Broadbent, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis and Julie Walters. The cast also features David Bradley, Jessie Cave, Frank Dillane, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, Helen McCrory, Natalia Tena, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Bonnie Wright.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

TWILIGHT’S RELEASE DATE BROUGHT FORWARD

Written by Mike

Source: Summit

Summit Entertainment, have moved the release date forward for Twilight to the 21st of November, essentially covering Harry Potter and the Half Blood Princes’ now vacant slot!

Press release:

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT MOVES UP RELEASE DATE FOR
TWILIGHT TO NOVEMBER 21, 2008

Los Angeles, CA August 15, 2008 – TWILIGHT, the first film in Summit
Entertainment’s thriller romance franchise, has moved up its North American
release date to Friday, November 21, 2008. The film, which was previously
planned to be released on December, 12, 2008, is taking advantage of an
opening in the upcoming fall release calendar. The new release date for
TWILIGHT allows the studio to both bring the film to the written-series’
enormous fan base sooner, and to present the film in more theatres prior to
the holiday movie-going season where traditionally screen time for any
popular film is limited.

“When Warner Bros. decided to move HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE to
the summer of 2009, we saw a unique opportunity to slot in our film which
has been gaining tremendous awareness and momentum over the past several
months,” said Rob Friedman, Co-Chairman and CEO of Summit Entertainment. “We
by no means are trying to fill the shoes of the incredible POTTER franchise
for 2008, rather we are just looking to bring the fans of Stephenie Meyer’s
incredible book series the film as soon possible from a programming
perspective.”

Starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the thriller-romance based
on Stephenie Meyer’s publishing phenomenon, the film is directed by
Catherine Hardwicke from a script by Melissa Rosenberg (STEP UP). Karen
Rosenfelt (DEVIL WEARS PRADA), Greg Mooradian and Wyck Godfrey will produce
along with Mark Morgan via his Maverick Films banner.

TWILIGHT tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan (Stewart) who moves to
the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, and becomes
drawn to Edward Cullen (Pattinson), a pale, mysterious classmate who seems
determined to push her away. But neither can deny the attraction that pulls
them together.even when Edward confides that he and his family are vampires.
Their unorthodox romance puts her in physical danger when Edward’s nemesis
comes to town and sets his sights on Bella.
